Sister Samiya

When I first came to the church, the music resonated with me. It sounded clean and pure. The words of the songs meant something; they were powerful. I clearly heard the music and instruments. I remember the song, He Put a Light Down in the Valley. I was in a dark place at the time. I had an experience with the Lord, but attended a lot of churches that were very religious and all about entertainment.

I remember feeling the Spirit of God when I first came and I knew I wanted more from the Lord. The Lord has helped me in every aspect of my life. When I began attending the church at 18 years old I had dropped out of college. I saw many of the young people going to school and spending time studying. Growing up in West Oakland, I didn’t’ have examples like that. I was baffled that so many youth were on the right track and that inspired me to go back to school. With the support of the church, I was able to go back to school and obtain my bachelors and masters degrees.
